What Actually Helped My Baby’s Eczema (After Trying Everything)

If you’ve ever dealt with baby eczema, you know how overwhelming it can feel. Watching your baby’s skin become red, irritated, and uncomfortable is heartbreaking and finding something that actually works can take a lot of trial and error.

We tried what felt like everything to help our baby’s eczema. From well-known over-the-counter products to more natural approaches, nothing seemed to fully calm his skin. At one point, I even started making my own laundry detergent to eliminate any possible irritants.

Eventually, we had to use a prescription steroid cream to get his eczema under control. While that helped manage the flare-up, I didn’t want to rely on it long-term unless absolutely necessary.

What Finally Made the Biggest Difference

Once his skin was calmer, the product that truly helped heal and maintain it was Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream.

This cream made a noticeable difference. It soothed his irritated skin, reduced redness, and kept flare-ups manageable. Now, whenever he starts to have a breakout, we apply extra lotion to that area, and it clears up without needing the prescription cream.

Other Changes That Helped

1. Homemade Laundry Detergent
I wanted to remove any possible hidden irritants, so I started making our own detergent. Here’s what I used:

  • 1 cup washing soda
  • 1 bar of grated Kirk’s Original Coco Castile Bar Soap

Most recipes include Borax, but I chose to leave it out since I wasn’t sure how his skin would react. This simple switch gave me peace of mind during flare-ups.

2. Gentle Body Wash Options
For bath time, we kept things simple and soothing. Two products that worked well for us were:

Both were gentle on his skin and didn’t seem to trigger irritation.

A Note for Other Parents

From what I’ve learned, many babies do grow out of eczema over time. But when you’re in the middle of it, it can feel like a lot to handle. It’s tough seeing your baby uncomfortable and not knowing what will help.

If you’re going through this right now, I hope sharing what worked for us gives you a starting point and maybe a little relief knowing you’re not alone in figuring it out.

Every baby’s skin is different, but sometimes it just takes one product or small change to make a big difference.
